Lady Antebellum Gets Nostalgic

Lady Antebellum are hard at work on the follow-up to their multi-platinum sophomore CD, ‘Need You Now,’ and the trio may be getting a little misty-eyed about the past on the new disc.

Lady A have teamed up again with writer Josh Kear (who co-penned their mega-hit ‘Need You Now’) for a tune on the new collection called ‘Dancing Away With My Heart,’ a song about those butterflies that come with first love. Apparently, that sentimental tune set the reflective tone of album number three for the group.

“We all remember high school dances and how innocent those little moments were,” Lady A’s Charles Kelley tells Entertainment Weekly. “There’s gonna be a lot of nostalgic songs on the record. Maybe that’s just because we’re all getting a little older.”

Charles also reveals that the hectic pace of superstardom has all three missing their salad days just a bit, and longing for those anonymous, uncomplicated fun times of their youth. “Now we’re so busy and there’s a little part of us that yearns for a time when it was a little simpler. I don’t know what fueled that.”

While Charles and his bandmate Dave Heywood had a chance to actually go back and attend their 10-year high school reunion this past year, they were too busy to take the trip down memory lane with their classmates. But, says Charles, “we did make a little video for ‘em saying we missed ‘em and hoped everybody was doing well.”

To ensure they had time to write and would end up with more great songs this time around, Lady A brought many of their co-writers out on the road with them during last year’s tour. Tom Douglas, who co-penned ‘I Run to You,’ and their current single, ‘Hello World,’ makes the cut again this time around with a song called ‘Heart of the World,’ which Charles says has the trio really excited. “We believe so much in that message and so much in what that song says,” Dave told the Boot. “Hillary [Scott] had that song on her iPod. Someone had given it to her two or three years ago when she was going through a little bit of a rough time. She played it for us, and it was literally a piano and Tom’s vocal on it. It almost brought all three of us to tears. We knew that’s the song that we were looking for. That’s what we wanted to say and be affiliated with … that kind of message.”

They’re also talking about including a collaboration on the new project, which would be a first for the group. And though they’re off the road and in the studio for a month or two, they obviously can’t stay away from the stage for too long. They’ll perform a benefit for the W.O. Smith Music School at Nashville’s Wildhorse Saloon February 18. The school provides affordable music lessons to underprivileged kids from low-income families throughout Middle Tennessee.
